The Malata T8 Finally got here, Here is the spec.
NV Tegra 2 1GHz
1G DDR RAM
512 MB ROM
16 G INNARD storage
9.7" IPS screen
2 points multitouch screen
1024 X 768 resolution
3G WCDMA
For this review, I will use three machine, my original T2 ( the first batch with Malata logo), a new T2 which I help someone to get ( with a Zpad logo ), and the T8.
Here are some pictures
I am going to update more in the next few days.
Here are the first impression
1) Workmanship is a lot better than my T2.
2) There is no complaint on the IPS screen, just plain beautiful.
3) Not a great surprise ( other than the crazy list price....hahaha ), it's a good performer, but I am not as excited about it as when I had my T2.
4) Since the ROM is identical with the T2 ROM, performance is about the same.
Quadrant advance about 2500, after Data2loop about 3300.
Neoscore is at about 50fps
5) There are few people complaint about the WIFI performance, and here is the result
The T2 and T8 is about the same. This is the WIFI analyzer app which you can download from Market.
This picture is showing T2 and T8 about 2 m from the router and in the same room
This picture is showing T2 and T8 at about 8 m away from the router, in another room through a narrow corridor, but still inline with the router.
So, is there a WiFi issue? could be and here are the possible reasons:
1) Manufacturing problem, disconnected cable?
2) Defective component?
3) User Error?
Could be anyone of the above, but for sure, this got blow way out of proportion.
In fact, the person who brought the unit for RMB 2000, got a exchange unit from the store in GZ.
Hahaha.........so I guess this story tell us that you will have to be patient and polite in order to get help....
Anyway, Here are some issues
1) Android 3.0 ---- Currently, this unit ship with Android 2.2 only, manufacturer is working on the 3.0 kernel, but don't know when. So, I would said at this point it has no 3.0. However, if this does not have it, so does all the machine ( Woow, Viewsonic, NIA, Onky0....etc) based on this platform. Is 3.0 important? Yes and No at this moment. In term of Yes, it is important because this is the future. In term of No, I don't think the UI on Xoom is getting a lot of fanfare. 3.0 is going to be important, but at this point, I am not sure how many Apps will be designed for 3.0 specifically. For Example, the so call 2.3 and above only Samurai II Game has been mod for android 2.2 here http://www.ez-pad.net/android-3304-1-1.html
2) Resolution ---- This is more interesting. For Apps, this does not seems to be a big issue, I installed a few apps already and it runs without problem. Game, however, is not 100% the same. Because of the rare resolution, some of the games may not run ( I haven't found one yet, but I am sure there will be, most likely a 3D game ), I installed Angry bird, Jewellust, Fruit Nijia and Samurai II. All of them run with a little bit different result.
Angry bird --- No problem at all, fit that resolution nicely.
Fruit Nijia --- Run, but a little bit deformed.
Jewellust --- Run, a little bit overflow off the screen.
Samurai II --- Run, a little bit overflow off the screen.
I think this can be solved by modifying the ROM in the future, but limiting the resize on the short edge only, i.e. there will be a black bar on the long edge.
If you use it more on surfing the web, using apps ( Quick office connect is beautiful ), reading ( comic, newspaper, magazine....etc), this is no problem for you at all and this is much better than T2.
If you mostly want to do games, then may be you will have to wait for the mod games for this resolution.
Conclusion:
For this list price, I would not buy it.... I don't even think any sane people would but you never know.
I don't think they will sell at this price when there is mass production unless Malata just wanted to kill this product.
I think it 's reasonable if this unit is selling at about HKD 3K for WIFI only and 3.4K for the 3G model.
For people who already have a T2, Viewsonic, NIA, Woow...etc, this may not be a attractive buy, because you only get the better screen, but the same stunning performance.
For people who does not have the above, now is more choice, T2 ot T8.
Finally, I have to say it again and again, THIS IS NOT A IPAD KILLER, if you want an IPAD, go buy an IPAD. They are totally different. If you really wanted to compare, this is closer to netbook and notebook. perform better than netbook, and run longet than most notebook.
It finally got here this afternoon and here are some pictures.
