I agree with you that generic monitor is good enough for photo editing.
Personally, an affordable, good enough monitor is what I need, and I think buying a high grade LCD monitor is not needed.
As you point out the importance to have an accurate enough monitor to work on, the fact is so far every monitor I've ever use before, the whitepoint is far off D65, the worst case I met before is the default 6500k color settings of a monitor turns out to be 7400K, that's why I need a Spyder 5 to help me tune it closer to sRGB. |
