Depends on what device you are using, some may recognise only NTFS but not exFAT or vice-versa.

I am just generalising the situation under typical setup/usage

Sure there are some cases when NTFS is preferred just because it's a must
eg. Modern MagicTV STB (current models) is compatible with NTFS but not exFAT, if a recording >4GB needs to be transferred then the receiving HDD side has to be either in EXT2/3 or NTFS

Another example is when dealing with older OSes like WinXP without SP2, OSX earlier than 10.6 where exFAT FS is not available

No point to use NTFS in modern systems unless you absolutely need backwards compatibility with older OSes as stated earlier
