Best LGA1155 u 4 oc?

My trusty i5-2500k ES finally passed out, after years of service, running at 4.9G!   I'm 2 lazy 2 upgrade the whole setup so just want to find the best CPU for replacement.   I vaguely recall that the 3670k & 3770k tend 2 run pretty hot right?  If so, my best bet is a i7-2700k, provided I can still find one?   Or you guys have any suggestion?

Tx bro!

The Sandy Bridge CPUs i5-2500K / i7-2600K / i7-2700K are no longer available new, if you want one you need to search for it second hand.

You may still be able to find a Core i5 3570K or Core i7 3770K on the market, which is currently your best bet. However, you may not be able to overclock them to 4.9G, or if you can, they are likely to be hotter than a Sandy Bridge K CPU.

And one more thing : You need to find out if your motherboard supports using and overclocking the 3570K or 3770K if you decide to get one of them. Not every motherboard that uses the Intel P67 or Z68 chipsets can overclock them.

If he's playing with 2500K ES for years, I guess somehow his board supports OC.

May I know how could u achieve 4.9GHz? Relying on the ES quality?

Not quite. If he is using a 6 series chipset (P67/Z68) motherboard,  it may not support overclocking of the Ivy Bridge K series. Even if the overclocking is supported it may need a BIOS update.

At least I know Gigabyte motherboards are like this. Without a UEFI bios update (which may or may not be available depending on the motherboard) the Gigabyte P67/Z68 motherboards did not support overclocking the 3570K/3770K (they used traditional BIOS at that time).

Tx.  That's exactly my concern that the ivybridge tends 2 run quite hot and given I'm running Matx set up, my choice of cooling is rather limited.

As it turns out seems that my CPU is still alive.   I took the motherboard (Asus Maximus iv gene-z) out of the case and it booted fine.  I'm hoping that it's just dust/loose screws somewhere causing problems.  Fingers crossed.

Tx. Yes indeed I need 2 upgrade the uefi in order for the board to support ivybridge.   The bummer is that with my ES chip, I'm stuck with my rather old version of uefi.

In case it wasn't clear, mine's running 4.9 in turbo mode.   I didn't get the impression that ES is unreliable so perhaps I was lucky?   Don't quite remember the settings now as it was done almost three years ago.   But if u r curious about my set up, it's in my signature.
