I've been using Asus motherboards since the era of PVI-486AP4. In the past I didn't have Asus motherboard dying before they were retired. One particular motherboard P2B actually worked for at least 7 or 8 years before it is thrown away.
In recent years I've started to have dying motherboards:
- P5K-SE
- P5K/EPU
- P7H55-M/USB3 (bought in late 2011, chose Clarkdale instead of Sandy Bridge)
I think most of these worked for roughly 4 years before they failed. I'm not complaining, just want to ask whether this is the norm.
(I recognize the costs of motherboards are different - P2B cost more than any of the three I listed above, and was already 4x the price of a current H81M-E ($340) even before adjustment for inflation.
I didn't have a good experience with Asrock. I had pretty good experiences with Gigabyte but don't want to buy it anymore after this news: http://www.hkepc.com/12018/page/2
So I'm sticking to Asus motherboard no matter what.)

Motherboard LED on. CPU FAN on. No POST. No display. No Beep. Using another power supply does not change anything.

sorry to hear that, at least it served you well.
I am still using a q6600 as unRAID server, another q9550 as workstation.
Funny thing is, they are smoother than most i5 ultrabook.
I recently bought asus z97 and 4790k. today one of the lock of a RAM Slot is broken, and i realized how flimsy the plastic lock. Quality is declining I think ~_~

Using P7P55 for 5 years. One Ram slot fails and the board starts having some minor errors recently.

Yes, I found that notebooks run slower than desktop, even if a notebook CPU is supposed to be slightly faster than a desktop CPU in terms of MHz or architecture.

I think sometimes it is caused by bad driver by manufacturer.
E.g. I have two Sony Vaio 13 Pro, and they are laggy like hell, no matter how i fix them ~_~
Nowadays, using chrome alone can occupy a lot of resources. I regret buying ultrabook for company use.
End up building two desktops to replace them.

cpu wise, mobile i5 is already faster than most 775 socket CPU la.
but driver is really bad from most notebook maker (i guess except Lenovo and Asus and Dell) ?

I had similar experience recently. Happened to multiple motherboards including Asus MB I kept as spare. Symptoms were motherboard LED on, CPU Fan spins. No POST nor error beep
swapping PSU and even another CPU didn't help
At the end I have found it was something to do with the RAM. none of them were faulty but I had to install one at a time (and w/ swap around) till all of them detected

Yes, this often happens with RAM and/or the slot having bad contact.
I've tried each RAM individually in different slots.

Parts count and complexity : P5K-SE = P2B x3-5....
Get a P5K-E in that moment when you're looking for something designed to last
Cheap boards are designed to waste no matter what fancy parts they claimed will last for 5/10/15/20.....years
