Even if the glass doesn't get scratched easily, the coating is still vulnerable!

But it doesn't mean it won't break. Think about the weight of a DSLR with standard zoom lens then think about the thickness of the filter. I bet that it will break if the point of impact is on the surface of the filter when you drop it from you hand.

It happens if the front element of the lens faces downward and hit some sharp object......... I doubt if this is very likely

A blunt object could be enough given the weight of camera and thickness of the filter.

how often do you drop your camera with front element facing downwards?....... It is filter thread that would probably hit the ground.... The chance of some object hitting the front element would be really low @@

Yes, you're right. I don't know anyone dropping his/her camera frequently. Even with normal filters, they don't break with no reason. But my point is if they break, I don't think Sapphire glass helps much. Besides, even if the glass is intact after an accident, the coating may have been damaged already or the filter mount/ring has been deformed which render the filter worthless.

Don't take it too serious. Most of the time, the filter protects the owner's heart, not the lens.
