Cloning only works when the size of target disk is larger or equal to the source disk. E.g. You can clone  a 1TB disk to a 3 TB disk. But you cannot clone the 3T disk back to the 1T. All format should be the same. (mbr/gpt, ntfs/fat/hfs...)
